The Woodlands Breaks National Record in the Boys 4x200 - Texas State Meet 2018 Recap

Highlights from the Texas UIL State Championships in Austin --

Saturday -

Wyatt TX's 20-year-old national high school record in the boys 4x100 relay came under fire in the 6A final as Katy Seven Lakes ran 39.80 for No. 2 all-time and The Woodlands ran 39.98 for No. 5 all-time. Wyatt's record is 39.76. 

Later, The Woodlands smashed Wyatt's 4x200 national record with a time of 1:23.35. That broke the 1998 record of 1:23.31.KeSean Carter, the main cog in The Woodlands' relays, also won the 6A 100 meters in 10.22 seconds. 

Katy Seven Lakes was second in 1:23.42, good enough for No. 3 all-time.

- Branson Ellis of Tyler Lee jumped 18-3.25 to win the pole vault. That's No. 4 all-time behind Mondo Duplantis, Chris Nilsen and Shawn Barber. Ellis took attemps at 18-8.25. Ellis' best coming into the state meet was 17-4.

- Jake Merrell stamped himself as one of the best small rural school track athletes in history. The senior from Turkey Valley won the Class 1A 800 meters in 1:51.71. He also won the 1,600 meters in 4:24.19. He also anchored his team's meet-record setting 4x400 relay (3:25.49).

- Senior Sophie Lasswell from Conroe Oak Ridge won the 6A girls 3,200 meters in 10:24.52 to cap her one and only high school track season. She tried doubling back in the 1,600 meters a few hours later but took ninth.

- Sophomore Ryan Schoppe from LaPorte won the 6A boys 3,200 meters in 9:09.26.

- Sha'Carri Richardson of Dallas Carter ran a sparkling time of 11.12w (+3.6 m/s) to win the Class 4A 100 meters and also 23.02w to win the 200 (+3.2). She also anchored Carter's winning 4x100 relay (46.57).

- Kalon Barnes of Silsbee surpassed Anthony Schwartz of American Heritage FL as the fastest sprinter in the country, clocking 10.04w (+3.2 m/s). As with nearly all of the sprints in Austin this weekend, the performance was wind-aided. He won the 200 meters in 20.55w (+2.8).

- The DeSoto girls ran a US#1 time of 45.16 seconds in the 6A 4x100 relay. The squad consisted of Bryannia Murphy, JaEra Griffin, Cierra Wash and Jada Laye. Later, DeSoto ran a US#1 time of 3:38.59. 

- Wonders Oguejifor from Cypress Springs, a sophomore, won the 6A girls 800 meters in 2:09.97.

- Christian Griffin from Atascocita edged out Brendan Herbert to win the 6A boys 800 meters, 1:52.56 to 1:52.79.

- Katti Ealy-Pulido of Collins won the 6A girls 100-meter hurdles in 13.69, wind legal. That's tied for US#8.

- Tre'Bien Gilbert of Converse Judson had a big day in the 6A boys hurdles, winning the 110-meter highs in 13.53, a wind-legal US#1. He also ran US#2 36.18 to win the 300s.

- Kynnedy Flannel from Alvin won the Class 6A 100 meters in 11.35 (wind legal). The she blasted her way to 22.95w (+3.4) in the 200 meters. Kennedy Blackmon from Plano was second in 23.57 after winning the 400 in 54.00.

- The Duncanville girls ran 1:35.05 for a US#1 and state championship victory in the 4x200 relay. Later, the finished second to DeSoto in the 4x400, running US#2 3:39.00.

- Lavone Brown from Alief Taylor won a tight race in the 6A boys 400, edging out Matthew Boling of Strake Jesuit by .01 seconds, 46.75 to 46.76. Boling came back to win the boys long jump with 24-0.

- Cale Kassen ran to a 2A boys hurdles sweep. He ran 13.91w for the 110s and a meet record 37.10 in the 300s.

- Dereck Elkins from RR Stony Point won the 6A boys 1,600 meters in 4:13.19.

- Klein Collins HS ran 3:12.10 to lead three teams under 3:13 in the 6A boys 4x400 final.

- Otito Ogbonnia from Katy Taylor swept 6A throws titles in the boys shot put (66-1) and discus (187-11).

- Anna Cathryn Griffith of Taylor broke her own 4A girls pole vault record by making 13-3.

- Jillian Johnson of Mansfield cleared 5-10 in the 6A girls high jump. 

- Mackenzie Hayward from Lewisville Marcus jumped 13-6 to win the 6A girls pole vault. Four girls jumped 13 feet or higher. 

- Koi Johnson of Dickinson won a tremendous 6A girls triple jump competition by just a quarter of an inch. Johnson jumped 41-8.25. Tosin Alao from Allen was second with 41-8 despite jumping into a slight head wind. 

- Travian Blaylock of Atascocita jumped 50-7.25 to win the 6A boys triple jump. That mark is US#3. Chris Welch of Dickinson, who owns the longerst jump in the nation, was second with 50-3. 

Friday - 

Jasmine Moore of Mansfield Lake Ridge popped a big wind-aided jump of 45 feet, 4.75 inches (3.8w) to win the Class 5A triple jump at the state meet in Austin. The mark is superior to the wind-legal national record and trails only one other performer, Brittany Daniels, as the all-time all-conditions high school best. Daniels of Merrill West CA had a wind-aided mark of 45-7.50 in 2005. All of Moore's fair jumps were over the allowable wind for record-setting purposes.

Moore also won the long jump with 20-8. That, too, was aided by a 3.5 m/s wind. She also ran on her team's 4x100 relay, which clocked 46.30 for second place. And she ran on her team's winning 4x200 relay, which ran US#8 1:37.11.

- In the morning session on the track, Graydon Morris and London Culbreath won 3,200-meter titles in warm conditions. Morris, of Aledo, won the 5A boys race in 9:14.95. Culbreath of McKinney North, won the 5A girls race in 10:40.06.

Culbreath returned later in the day to win the 1,600 meters in 4:50.26. Morris came back to outkick Michael Abeyta in the 5A boys race, 4:15.40 to 4:16.53.

- Freshman Bailey Goggans of Marble Falls ran 2:10.10 to win the 5A girls 800 meters.

- Sophomore Michael Abeyta from El Paso Hanks ran 1:53.38 to win the 5A boys 800 meters. 

- The McKinney North girls ran 46.11 to win the 5A girls 4x100 relay.

- Robert Teer of Arlington Seguin ran a wind-aided 13.48 (+4.2w) to win the 5A boys 110-meter hurdles.

- Kelcie Simmons of Leonard ran 11.46 (3.7w) to win the 3A girls 100 meters. Her sister, Natatlie, won the 200 with a wind-legal 24.00 seconds. The sisters also ran on the winning 4x400 relay (3:54.97). Natalie also won the long jump with 18-8 (2.4w) and Kelcie was second. 

- Freshman Kenondra Davis from Fort Worth Trimble Tech took the 5A girls 100 in 11.43 (3.1w). She won the 200 meters in 23.40 (2.2w).

- Keishon Everly from Fort Worth Trimble Tech made it a sweep for the school in the 100 with a winning time of 10.23 seconds (2.5w). He won the 200 meters in 20.71 (3.0w).

- Bailey Lear of Frisco Heritage ran US#6 53.34 to win the 5A girls 400 meters. She was secone in the 200 meters with 23.74 (2.2w). She also anchored her team to the 4x400 title in 3:43.72. 

- Fort Bend Marshall won the 5A boys 4x400 relay in 3:16.47.

- Sophomore Zoe Burleson of Rocksprings broke the 1A meet record in the girls discus with 150-4. 

- Faith Ette from Mansfield Lake Ridge won the 5A girls shot put with 49-4.

- Jake Lambeth from Poth jumped 7-0.50 to win the Class 3A boys high jump. His season best of 7-1 has him ranked sixth in the country. 

- Nastassja Campbell from New Caney won the 5A girls pole vault with a new meet record clearance of 13-9. 

- Demond Demas of Houston North won the 4A boys long jump with a mark of 23-8.50. (1.9w). 

- Alex Loving from Amarillo won the 5A boys long jump with a best of 23-10.25 (2.6w).
