Girls 3200 Alamo Heights sr Abby Gray is the defending champ (10:44.59), a 2-time NXN finalist (21st at Nationals last fall), Foot Locker Nats 18th, and clocked 5A#2/TX#10 10:43.95 to win Area. Forney sr Lauren Barrientos won her District in 5A#1/TX#9 10:43.84.
Boys 3200 Frisco Independence sr Carter Blunt is the 2x defending champ (6th as a freshman) and moved to all-time TX#10 with his 8:58.03 New Balance Outdoor 2-mile win last year (worth 8:54.91 for 3200). He also won State XC the last 3 seasons and finished well at NXN and Foot Locker as a junior, but missed those meets as a senior due to injury. College Station sr Jon Bishop was runner-up last year in 9:19.24 and is the 2nd fastest Region winner after Blunt, 9:23.53.
Girls 4x100 Top teams include: McKinney North TX#5/US#11 46.05 (Region), Arlington Seguin TX#6/US#12 46.16 (Texas Relays), Lancaster TX#14/US#35 46.83.
Boys 4x100 Top teams include: Fort Bend Marshall TX#1/US#1 40.41 (Region), defending champ Lancaster TX#2/US#7 40.62 (District), Mansfield Legacy TX#6/US#9 40.69, Waxahachie TX#7/US#11 40.74, George Ranch TX#8/US#13 40.78
Girls 800 Calallen soph Brooke Barrington tops the 5A list with her 2:12.60 TX#9 Region winner. Joshua jr Soren Underwood is next best at 2:13.18 TX#11 and is the leading returner (6th last year). The top 2015 non-senior was silver medalist Halle McClintock, but she moved to Ohio.
Boys 800 Bryan soph Gus Hancock is the top returner (4th) and leads 5A with his 1:53.67 TX#11 Region win. Next fastest is Kingwood Park jr Carter Floyd at 1:54.44.
Girls 100 Hurdles Arlington Seguin sr Tonea Marshall electrified the Texas Relays crowd, clocking all-time US#4/TX#1 13.04 (+1.2). The LSU-signee is also the defending champ and set a US high school 60-meter hurdles record 8.02 to claim New Balance Indoor Nationals gold. Summit sr Ivy Walker was 4th last year.
Boys 110 Hurdles Summit sr Medric Roberson looks to improve on last year’s silver and is the lone returner. His TX#3/US#11 13.84 Region prelim leads 5A.
Girls 100 McKinney North jr Julia Madubuike sped 11.66 TX#7/US#21 to claim Area honors and that’s best in 5A. However Heritage jr Alyssa Gridiron beat Madubuike at Region II, clocking 11.71w (+3.4) in the prelims and 11.98 (-1.1) in the finals. Plainview soph Kaizha Roberts is the top returner (6th).
Boys 100 Chisholm Trail sr Tyson McDaniel (Region prelim) and Trimble Tech soph Keishawn Everly (Area) are the quickest in 5A at 10.38. McDaniel got the nod at Region as they both clocked 10.64 (+1.4) in the final. This field is deep and tight.
Girls 4x200 Top teams are: Arlington Seguin TX#6/US#11 1:37.20 (District), Spring Woods TX#9/US#16 1:38.83
Boys 4x200 In a deep field from a national perspective, the fastest squads are: Defending champ FB Marshall TX#1/US#1 1:24.07 (all-time US#10 at Region), Temple TX#9/US#10 1:24.98, Mansfield Legacy TX#11/US#12 1:25.22, and Waxahachie TX#13/US#14 1:25.29.
Girls 400 Region II was a monster! McKinney soph Bailey Lear is the top returner (bronze) and motored TX#6/US#34 54.66 at Region. But that was just 2nd as Frisco fr Whitney Williams broke the tape in TX#1/US#15 53.98. Lake Ridge soph Ariel Ford took the 3rd spot and was the 9th qualifier in 5A#3/TX#12 55.48.
Boys 400 George Ranch jr Champion Allison struck Region III gold in 46.83 TX#1/US#10. FB Marshall sr John Isom was 2nd in 47.53 5A#2/TX#10. No one returns from last year’s final.
Girls 300 Hurdles Elgin sr Selena Wright leads 5A with her 42.07 TX#4/US#13 at Texas Relays. Lancaster sr Janai’ Garrett earned 2015 silver and took her District in a season best 42.17 TX#6/US#17.
Boys 300 Hurdles In a very competitive field, George Ranch jr Jayson Baldridge is quickest based on his 36.60 TX#2/US#2 Texas Relays effort and was the National AAU Junior Olympic 400 hurdle champ in the 15-16 age-group last summer. He’ll be challenged by Timberview sr Chuck Harris (36.84 TX#7/US#8 at Area) and Abilene Cooper sr Aaron Anderson (37.04 TX#9/US#13 at Region). Missing is the big name, Canyon sr Norman Grimes, the 2015 State 300H and Pan-American Junior 400H gold medalist who clocked TX#1/US#1 36.33 for 2016 Texas Relays gold before getting injured.
Girls 200 McKinney North soph Jania Martin was 6th in 2015 and comes in with 5A#1/TX#4/US#12 23.67 from Region. Mansfield Legacy jr Ja’Leesa Giles is the top returner (3rd) and posted a season best 24.10 behind Martin at Region II.
Boys 200 FB Marshall jr Shamon Ehiemua is the defending champ and posted a 20.64 (+1.4) TX#1/US#4 Region III win. Burges sr Dartez Hamlin looks to improve on his 2015 4th place and took his District in a season best 20.76.
Girls 1600 Alamo Heights sr Abby Gray looks to defend and leads the 5A list with her Region IV 4:55.95 TX#7/all-time TX#70.
Boys 1600 The top two return and are expected to battle it out again. Frisco Independence sr Carter Blunt, a UCLA signee, wants another gold (won the last two) and leads 5A with his 4:10.35 Region II mark. College Station sr Jon Bishop would like to improve on his silver and has a season best 4:14.83 from District.
Girls 4x400 Top teams are: McKinney North TX#6 3:45.78 (Region) and George Ranch TX#7 3:46.45.
Boys 4x400 Fastest squads are: Lancaster 3:13.39 TX#4/US#4 (Area), Timberview 3:13.93 TX#9/US#11, and FB Marshall 3:14.76 TX#12/US#18. |
